The effect of severe plastic deformation by high pressure torsion (HPT) on radio frequency plasma nitriding of X5CrNi1810 steel was investigated. The results reveal that HPT enhances the effect of nitriding at 350 degreesC leading to doubling of the nitrided layer thickness, This layer was shown to consist of expanded austenite and possibly some iron nitrides, (C) 2002 Acta Materialia Inc.
