The erosion-corrosion tests of some Fe3Al-based alloys were carried out in an elevated temperature erosion tester. In this facility, solid particle (SiO2) and corrosive gas (SO2) were fed into oil-fired gas by the feed subsystems, respectively. The test specimens were impacted in the temperature range of 600-800 degreesC. Erosion-corrosion behavior of Fe3Al-based alloys was compared with that of Ni and Co alloys. The results showed that erosion resistance of Fe3Al-based alloys was much better than that of Ni and Co alloys at this temperature range and it was not affected significantly by corrosion. Surface observations carried out by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) after experiment indicated that the surface eroded of Fe3Al-based alloy exhibited predominantly the flaky appearance while Ni and Co alloys had more of the ploughing effect. The erosion resistance was improved for Fe3Al-based alloys with molybdenum additions. Erosion mechanisms of the test alloys are also discussed in the present paper. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V.
