It is now well admitted that HIV infection leading to AIDS is associated with an abnormal susceptibility of T cells to undergo apoptosis. Recent progress in research into programmed cell death has resulted in the identification of the principal pathways involved in this process. Thus the extrinsic as well as the intrinsic pathways converge to the mitochondria considered as the main sensor of programmed cell death. This review summarizes our knowledge of the influence of mitochondrial control on T cell death during HIV and SIV infections. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science (USA). All rights reserved.
