Prostatitis revisited - New definitions, new approaches

Prostatitis represents one of the most difficult and confusing subjects in infectious diseases. Problems with the traditional approach to chronic prostatitis syndromes led to development of a new consensus classification. This article compares and contrasts the traditional and consensus classifications, then describes the effect of the new classification on the proportion of symptomatic patients diagnosed with inflammation. The new consensus concepts have renewed interest in the causes and treatment of chronic prostatitis syndromes that should lead to improved algorithms for diagnosis and patient management.
