A three-dimensional supramolecular compound [Ni(IN)(2)(H2O)(4)] 1 has been rationally designed and synthesized by hydrothermal method, and the structure was characterized with elemental analysis, FT-IR spectrum and X-ray diffractometer. In the packing structure, the stronger intermolecular O-(HO)-O-... hydrogen-bonded and pi-pi stacking interactions are the most significant factors of controlling the novel supramolecular sheet fashion for the title compound. The third-order non-linear optical property of compound 1 was also investigated, and it exhibits nicer reverse saturable absorption and self-focusing performance. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V.
