The possibility of using of electrospark alloying (ESA) to increase the resistance of molybdenum to high-temperature corrosion has been explored. The island-like structure of the alloyed surface has been shown to considerably increase the corrosion resistance of molybdenum, but does not completely prevent the molybdenum from vaporizing. On the basis of thermodynamic calculations of the change in the number of active centers for MoO3 scale vaporization, the size of the unalloyed area of the ESA-coating surface was estimated as similar to16%.
