Starting from the standard truncated Painleve expansion, by making use of the variable separation procedure, a general variable separation solution of the (2 + 1)-dimensional breaking soliton system is derived. Two classes of novel localized coherent structures like both multi-peakon-antipeakon solution and multi-compacton-anticompacton solution are found by selecting appropriate functions. These new structures exhibit some novel interaction features which are different from one of the known results. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
