All ocular epithelia examined to date transport fluid as a consequence of a sufficiently high water permeability bestowed by endogenous water channels (aquaporins) and transepithelial solute movement due to active transport mechanisms. This article provides a synopsis of the current understanding of electrolyte and fluid transport across corneal, conjunctival and lens epithelia. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
