Taiwan abalone Haliotis diversicolor supertexta exposed to different concentrations of dissolved oxygen (DO) at 7.18, 4.98, 3.08, and 2.11 mg/1 for 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72, and 96 h were examined for hemolymph osmolality, sodium concentration, acid-base balance, and glucose and lactate levels at 35 parts per thousand and 25 degreesC. Abalone following 12-h exposure to 2.11 and 3.08 mg/1 DO showed increases in hemolymph osmolality, sodium, and glucose and lactate levels. The level of hemolymph pCO(2) was inversely related to DO concentration, whereas the levels of hemolymph pH, pO(2), HCO3-, and TCO2 were directly related to DO concentration. It is concluded that the stress of DO at 3.08 mg/1 and lower causes disturbance in the acid-base balance as well as anaerobic metabolism of H. diversicolor supertexta, resulting in glucose and lactate productions and acidosis in a short-term period.
