Probe induced voids in a dusty plasma

An experimental study of the formation of voids (dust-free regions) around negatively biased probes in a dusty plasma is described. Stable voids are maintained by the balance of electric and ion drag forces on the dust particles. A theoretical model is proposed to explain how the size of the void scales with the probe bias potential. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.
