A novel 2D network polyoxometalate-based complex, {[Ba-2(DMF)(5)(H2O)(5)] SiW12O40.DMF.H2O}(n)(DMF=N,N-dimethyl formamide), has been synthesized and characterized with aid of element analysis, thermal analysis, and IR, UV spectra studies. The result of the X-ray crystallography analysis exhibits that the barium in the title composite has two kinds of coordination environments, i.e. the eight- and nine-coordination modes to show the novel 2D network pore-like structure. Not only the net is connected through W-O-1-Ba links and Ba-O-Ba links, but also three DMF molecules act as bridging to connect the adjacent Ba(II) ions. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
