Fibre-like Mg(OH)(2) nanoparticles were synthesized in aqueous solution at room temperature employing microwave irradiation as assistance, using common compounds magnesium nitrate and sodium hydroxide as reactants. The products with diameters in the range of 20-40 nm and lengths of 100-150 nm were characterized with X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED). The mechanism for the formation of fibre-like Mg(OH)2 nanoparticles is discussed. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
