A hybrid spatial differencing scheme, which is able to reduce false scattering in arbitrarily specified discrete directions of the discrete ordinates method and to retain false scattering in all other discrete directions, is proposed. In doing this, the discrete ordinate equations of the specified directions are solved along their propagating paths, while the discrete ordinate equations of the other discrete directions are solved with a conventional spatial differencing scheme (say, the diamond scheme). The hybrid scheme is verified and applied to a collimated irradiation problem. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
