Hyperspectral imaging was first introduced in satellite and airborne imaging and is now making its way into laboratory practice. Hyperspectral images are huge data files that require new thinking both in technical and conceptual matters. Some definitions are provided. An example using an InGaAs camera with liquid crystal tunable filter is introduced. The example is a 256 x 320 pixel image with 81 wavelength bands in the near infrared region (900-1700 nm). Signal processing for calibration in the correct units is important. Some concepts in calibration and signal treatment are shown. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
