Hot deformation of Al to high strains where the elongated grain thickness is reduced to near the subgrain diameter gives rise to equiaxed crystallites each having several facets of high misorientation. A model of continuous dynamic recrystallization, based on strain induced boundaries continuously incorporating dislocations, has many inconsistencies including the mistaken claim that dynamic recovery could not maintain low angle subboundaries. Such crystallites can be explained by change in grain geometry combined with dynamic recovery that also maintains steady state. (C) 2004 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd.
