Double aortic arch is a rare congenital heart defect resulting from improper development of the embryonic arches. Naturally occurring double aortic arches have been rarely reported, and animals with double aortic arches generally have a poor prognosis for survival. Most dogs and cats that undergo surgical correction of double aortic arches die during or a few hours after surgery.
