The growth of large-diameter (up to 80 mm) rare-earth oxyorthosilicate crystals is discussed. The scintillating performance of well-known Ce:Lu2SiO5 (LSO) crystals, which are the key contenders for positron emission tomography, and the Ce3+:Mg2+:Lu2SiO5-x, Ce3+:Ca2+:Lu2SiO5-x and Ce3+:Tb3+:Lu2SiO5 crystals developed in GPI of RAS are compared.
