A new, facile, and mild approach was developed to cut the conventional long and entangled multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) to short and dispersed ones with length of less than 1 mu m by ultrasonic-assisted chemical oxidation with ammonium persulfate (APS) in neutral aqueous solution at room temperature. The resulting products were characterized with Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and transmission electron microscope (TEM) techniques. The shortened MWCNTs formed stable dispersion state in water without the help of surfactants that provided possibility for further functionalizations and applications.
