Cranial ultrasonography has been used to identify brain injury in preterm neonates for more than two decades. More recently, magnetic resonance imaging has been used to evaluate brain development and pathology in these infants. In this review we describe how well findings from these two imaging modalities agree with histology findings and neuro-developmental outcome. In addition, we discuss studies comparing ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging findings. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.
