The influence of an inturnescent back coating, applied to a cotton/PESFR (Trevira CS (R)) fabric, on thermal and fire behaviour system is investigated. The inturnescent system is made of an acrylic binder resin and ammonium polyphosphate (APP). Thermal and fire behaviours are analysed. The pure acrylic binder resin coated on fabric leads to a decrease in the thermal and fire properties of the virgin materials. When APP is added to the binder resin, the decrease in the properties due to the handling treatment is limited. (c) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
