Although most burns are superficial and simple to treat, severe and extensive burns require complex, expensive, and time-consuming interventions. Large thermal injuries cause massive protein coagulation and cellular death, leading to local tissue damage. Large surface burns dramatically increase the potential for loss of fluids, electrolytes, and calories. Topical medications should be water-based, be easily applied and removed, not interfere with wound healing, and be readily excreted or metabolized.
