The adsorption of beta-sheet-rich fibrils produced in vitro via the self-assembly of polypeptides onto surfaces is found to be governed by electrostatic interactions. Chemically patterned substrates are used to create lateral micropatterns of fibrils and hybrid microstructures of fibrils with inorganic nanoparticles (see Figure). beta-sheet-rich fibrils are promising as functional biomaterials.
