Mannose-binding lectin: do we need it?

Mannose-binding lectin (MBL) deficiency has now been recognised for 15 years. Numerous studies have shown that MBL deficiency is associated with an increased susceptibility to a range of infections. However, the importance of MBL, in defence against infection is still debated.
