In this study the COMIS with sub-zones (COwZ) model was modified to allow predictions of personal exposure to contaminant sources in industrial buildings. A sub-zonal model of a person has been developed. Personal exposure resulting from various contaminant sources is simulated, taking both local variation in concentration and local influence of the occupant into account. The sub-zonal approach permits resolution of airflows, temperatures and pollutant concentrations within a room and throughout a whole building. COwZ incorporates zonal (sub-zonal) modelling within a conventional multizone model, offering advantages over multizone models but avoiding the greater difficulties associated with CFD modelling. Numerical simulations made within a large, empty ventilated room using COwZ have been compared with published experimental measurements and results from CFD modelling studies. Comparisons have also been made with the results of CFD studies made when the room was occupied. The simulations show that the local impact of a person is significant in some cases and should be considered for the assessment of personal exposure. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
