European evidence-based nutritional recommendations to the treatment and prevention of diabetes mellitus are now available. They were adopted also by all relevant Diabetes and Nutrition Associations in Germany: Deutsche Diabetes-Gesellschaft (DDG), Deutsche Adipositas-Gesellschaft (DAG), Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Ernahrungsmedizin (DGEM) und Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Ernahrung (DGE). A nutrition teaching system for diabetes-educators as well as a nutrition-guide for persons with diabetes were developed on the basis of these evidence-based recommendations to support a uniform approach to the implementation of nutritional therapy in diabetes throughout Germany. Nutrition plays a key role in the treatment and prevention of diabetes mellitus; it is effective as well as cost-efficient.
