For a commercially extruded AZ31 alloy, the basal plane in most grains was distributed parallel to the extruded direction. The sample having a pre-crack normal to the basal plane had a higher value of plane-strain fracture toughness than that having a pre-crack parallel to the basal plane. (c) 2005 Acta Materialia Inc.
