The use of a ligand directed strategy in the assembly of discrete cluster, 2D layers and 3D networks, using N-substituted glycine derivatives with o-iodobenzoyl (a bulky substituent) or pyrimidyl, create a new possibility in the design of coordination networks. According to the nature of the substituent, 2D layers (with o-iodobenzoyl) or 3D networks (with pyrimidyl), with tubular cavities and Ag center dot center dot center dot Ag short contacts, are obtained. The synthesis and crystalline structure of the ligand N-(pyrimidyl)giycine (1), its silver derivative [Ag(pyr-gly)] center dot 0.5H(2)O (2) and the silver derivative of o-iodohippuric acid [Ag(I-hip)] center dot 1.25H(2)O (3) are described. The structures of 2 and 3 present tubular cavities being, in complex 2 a 3D structure with cycles and clusters Ag4O4 that retains water inside the tubular channels. In the other hand, the compound 3 presents a 2D structure generated by macrocyclic rings formed between the ligand and the metal ion; these bi-dimensional networks are piled in the c-direction, and the different layers are detached by water molecules as an intercalation compound; in addition, each layer interacts with the others by stacking (distance, 3.38 angstrom) between series of two aryl rings inside of the channel and preserving it along the c-axis. Finally, short Ag center dot center dot center dot I contacts are also present as recognition factors in compound 3. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
