We analyze voting on subsidies for professional sports facilities in Houston, Texas and Green Bay, Wisconsin to learn more about voter preferences for these subsidies. The referendums studied were for professional football and basketball facilities. The results show that voters in close proximity to facilities tend to favor subsidies more than voters living farther from the facilities. The results from Houston indicate stronger support for subsidies by those in close proximity to a proposed site than from those near an existing site. (c) 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
