Solid heteropoly acid supported on silica gel (H3PW12O40/SiO2) is easily used as a heterogonous, reusable and efficient catalyst for conversion of aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes and ketones to their corresponding 1,3-oxathiolanes at room temperature in solution or under solvent-free conditions.
