School-based health centers and the primary care physician: an opportunity for collaborative care

This article introduces readers to the concept of health care at school-based health centers (SBHCs) and reviews the wide range of services offered, particularly preventative and mental health services. Focusing on adolescent asthma, obesity, and mental health, the article describes ways in which SBHCs are a resource for primary care physicians. SBHC providers can work collaboratively with the primary care physician to meet the needs of adolescent patients and parents by improving access and continuity of care, supporting management of chronic disease, and providing links to community resources.
