The evolution of deviatoric matrix stresses during in-situ compression tests was studied on a two-dimensional random short fiber-reinforced aluminum/Saffil (R) composite using neutron diffraction. Under a uniaxial load, the average matrix stress is triaxial and evolves as predicted by a simple Eshelby model. (c) 2006 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
