Using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, we have recorded spatial maps of confined electronic states in the troughs between self-organized Pt nanowires on Ge(001) that are spaced 2.4 nm apart. Two sub-bands are resolved, which correspond to the lowest energy levels of a quantum mechanical particle in a box. As expected, the spatial dl/dV maps exhibit a maximum and a minimum in the middle of the troughs for the n = 1 and n = 2 states, respectively.
