Generally, it is assumed that occlusal prematurities result in temporomandibular disorders (TMD). First come the occlusal prematurities, and, after a shorter or longer period, the healthy function of the temporomandibular joint becomes obstructed. However, it has never been subject of clinical research if indeed occlusal prematurities were first and TMD came second. This paper shows that TMD emerges synchronously to the development of the occlusion. This synchronous development of both TMD and occlusion is in clear disagreement with the theory that states that occlusal prematurities develop first and then cause TMD. The stumbling-block theory, introduced by us, concludes that many an occlusal interference may be the result or the trigger, but not the cause of TMD.
