The Wittig reaction of carbaldehydes with alkoxycarbonylhalomethylidenetriphenylphosphoranes can be performed with ease in solventless systems. The analogous reaction of carbaldehydes with acylhalomethylidenetriphenylphosphoranes requires a small amount of solvent, such as chloroform, in order for the reaction to proceed.
