The effects of short time (15 min) exposure to hypoxia on rat cardiomyocytes (H9c2) were examined. Exposure to hypoxia inhibited cell death via activation of MEK/extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK). Further, exposure to hypoxia promoted cell growth by down-regulation of p27 and phosphorylation of cyclin-dependent kinase 2 (CDK2) and retinoblastoma protein (Rb). (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V.
