The dynamics of the internal stretch vibration of CO adsorbed on Si(1 0 0) has been explored using sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy adopting an IR pump-SFG probe approach. For the saturated surface the vibrational population decays with a characteristic time of 2.3 +/- 0.5 ns. The substrate carrier density proved to be of negligible importance. For (CO)-C-13 the same decay time was found. For a surface with mixed isotopomers, a shorter decay time has been observed, as also for a partly saturated surface. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V.
