Polarization-discriminated spectra of a fiber-microsphere system were acquired. The authors have succeeded in developing a single-mode tapered fiber capable of maintaining the polarization of the probe beam. The spectra acquired from this system discriminated between transverse electric and transverse magnetic modes. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.
