Self-assembly synthesis in water, at room temperature, with dinuclear copper triethanolaminate and aqua-sodium building blocks as well as benzene-1,2,4,5-tetracarboxylate linkers leads to the formation of an heteronuclear Cu-Na assembly with a two-dimensional metal-organic framework, providing the first example of an aqua-soluble copper-containing coordination polymer that hosts infinite chains of decameric water clusters (H2O)(10) formed by quasiplanar cyclic water octamers with two pendent water molecules.
