We have studied the perovskite manganite CaMn1-xVxO3 samples (0 <= x <= 0.08) by field-cooled magnetization M-FC, zero-field-cooled magnetization M-ZFC and relative Young's modulus Delta E measurements. As x > 0.02, an anomalous 'diamagnetism' is observed. Corresponding to the presence of 'diamagnetism', Delta E exhibits an anomalous decrease with decreasing temperature. Such results can arise from an additional Mn3+O6 octahedron distortion because of the substitution V5+ for Mn4+, which leads to the orbit rotation of the e(g) electron. It is suggested that the force generated by the orbit rotation of the e(g) electron in the Mn3+O6 octahedron makes the spin canted, as a result, the vector sum of individual spins may be along or opposite to the direction of the applied field, macroscopically, the average magnetization exhibits positive or negative values. Additionally, the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction and anisotropy should also be considered. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
