New immunosuppressive strategies have improved short- and long-term graft survival. The current aim is to decrease the intensity of the immunosuppressive regimen, in an attempt to limit side effects and the direct toxicity of calcineurin inhibitor (CNI) for kidney function. We describe here current experience in liver and liver-kidney transplantation, the mechanism of tolerance and the immunosuppressive strategy used in liver transplantation. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V.
