The nanoscopic deformation behavior of a TiC particle and TiB whisker reinforced Ti-6Al-4V alloy matrix composite during tensile loading was investigated by in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) observation coupled with nanolithography. The AFM nanolithography technique was used to create a grating pattern on the polished surface to facilitate direct observation of local deformation. In situ observation of the composite subjected to tension was conducted to identify local deformation behavior under various applied loads. Nanoscale deformation and damage evolution during various stages of loading were measured and analyzed. (c) 2006 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
