Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) embedded in silica were prepared by a novel process of atom beam sputtering (ABS). Optical and structural properties of Ag NPs were studied by using ultraviolet-visible absorption, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The processes involving nucleation and growth of Ag NPs are discussed. The superiority of the ABS over ion implantation and ion beam mixing is discussed. These Ag NPs are found to be glucose sensitive, indicating their possible application in medical diagnostics. (c) 2006 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
