Oxidation behavior of C-Mn-Si transformation-induced plasticity-aided steel during dew-point control was investigated. Surface oxidation appeared as discontinuous, plate-shaped oxides aligned parallel to the surface, while the internal oxidation was revealed as rod-shaped oxides aligned normal to the surface. The alloy revealed amorphous Si-O, crystalline MnSiO3 and the Si-O oxide surrounded by Mn-O oxide. The types of oxide formed were determined by the kinetics of relative mobility and the concentration of the alloy-forming elements. (C) 2007 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd.
