The propulsion of 3 mu m polystyrene spheres along a subwavelength optical wire is demonstrated. Velocities in the range of 7-15 mu m/s are observed. Simulations are carried out to evaluate the evanescent field at the waveguide-water suspension interface. (C) 2007 Optical Society of America
