Copper doped ceria and ceria-zirconia mixed oxides were synthesized using the citric acid sol-gel method. The temperature-programmed oxidation (TPO) results showed that the Cu modification improved the low-temperature activity and the selectivity to CO2 of ceria for soot oxidation in the presence of NO and excess oxygen even after ageing at 800 degrees C for 20 h in flow air. Meanwhile, not only the segregation of Cu and sintering of CuO, but also the separation of Ce- and Zr-rich phases worsened the activity of the Cu-Ce-Zr catalyst after the high-temperature calcination.
