The damage accumulation of an atmospheric plasma sprayed thermal barrier coatings has been measured by acoustic emission analysis during cyclic oxidation at 1100 and 1050 degrees C. Here the measurement data was acquired before and during spallation. The time and temperature dependence of the thermal barrier coating damage kinetics have been modeled, based on the measured behavior. Prior to the onset of spallation the damage was found to follow super-parabolic kinetics. During spallation the damage kinetics accelerates and becomes linear. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V.
