A facile process was introduced to prepare zirconia-coated hematite particles ((FeO3)-O-2(@)ZrO2) in an aqueous solution. The amorphous ZrO2 shell was homogeneously deposited on the hematite surface, and the thickness of ZrO2 precursor shell is about 2-3 nm. The method shows a strategy for surface modification with an ultrathin inorganic layer. (c) 2008 The Ceramic Society of Japan. All rights reserved.
