Hydrogenation of o-Chloronitrobenzene by Platinum Nanoparticles on Activated Carbon

The assembled Pt catalyst was prepared using activated carbon as a support to capture unprotected Pt nanoparticles obtained from the decomposition of Pt-2(dba)(3) (dba = dibenzene acetone). Transmission electron microscopy showed that the size of the Pt nanoparticles depended on the decomposition pressure. The catalytic activity was evaluated by the liquid-phase hydrogenation of o-chloronitrobenzene. The Pt/C catalyst exhibited high conversion and selectivity. When the Pt nanoparticles were prepared at 2.0 MPa of hydrogen pressure and 30 degrees C, the average size of the Pt nanoparticles was 2.8 nm with 0.5% Pt loading. Under the hydrogenation conditions of 60 degrees C and 1.0 MPa hydrogen pressure, the dehalogenation rate was less than 1.67% while the TOF was 39.8 s(-1).
