A visible light photocatalytic arylation-lactonization sequence has been developed for the synthesis of gamma,gamma-disubstituted butyrolactones. This unprecedented transformation features simple experimental procedures under very mild conditions. A one-step synthesis of isobenzofuran-1(3H)-one has been carried out to demonstrate the synthetic application of this reaction.
