A one-pot synthesis of dihydroindenes from substituted benzenes and haloalkenes was developed. The reaction proceeded via a copper(II) triflate [Cu(OTf)(2)]-catalyzed tandem Friedel-Crafts alkylation/cyclization process with high efficiency under relatively mild conditions.
